Introduction:
During the 2024-2025 Grade 9 Day Event, I was put onto the Afterschool Event team. I took on the role of being a mini-point person and mini-producer, as well as a flex role/MC. Many challenges and difficulties popped up along the way, but we managed to overcome them!
Competency:
Theme 3: Goal Setting- Help others nurture their ambitions in the quest to attain the goals they have set for themselves.

Preparation:
At the first meeting on November 6th, I was assigned to the Afterschool Event. Because were missing 1/3 of our group, the atmosphere was quiet and shy. I took the initiative, as we did not have much time since the meeting was at lunchtime, to begin brainstorming ideas. By taking the initiative, I was able to help the other group members to nurture their goal of producing a solid and varied list of ideas. I contributed the idea of prizes for games as well as a movie; however, foreshadowing this, it was mostly a wasted effort. I created a document and began to list ideas that we came up with as a group. After reaching a solid number of ideas, Alexia dismissed us. That day Alexia told me that I could become a mini-point person for this event to get a taste of what it’s like to be a manager. I asked Alexia and Morgan plenty of questions for this event as I am in their guitar class.
On the 20th, we had our second meeting. By this point we began to have a solid idea of how the event would go. The raffle was scrapped, and them and floaters were moved to the Afterschool group. Alexia then officially appointed me to act as a manager. I accepted based off two factors: to learn what it was like to be a point person and to help Alexia to focus on other facets of the event. I noticed that she was stressed and extremely tired in guitar, so I decided that I could step up to help her attain her goal of a successful November event. During this meeting, I opened discussions and contributed ideas to get the rest of the group going. I created a list of questions, materials needed as well as equipment. We banged out all ideas and fine-tuned them to create a plausible plan. I assigned the roles, but I was unable to fully complete the list as some members were missing. I stayed behind to ask Ms. Rioux and Chole/Alexia questions on the specifications of materials needed and operation. Afterwards, I reworked and finalized the list of roles, equipment, and materials needed to complete event- which I sent to Alexia who used in an email.
On the 25th, I contacted Mr. Lu on board games, and we planned to meet up on the following day- however he was away that day.
On the day before the event, November 26th, I made a couple last-minute preparations. Mr. Lu was away that day with no mention of his return date, so I assumed the worst to ensure Alexia’s, and ultimately everyone in our group, goals of a successful event would be guaranteed. I spent lunch attempting to find Ms. MacPherson but ended up finding Ms. Rioux instead. I discussed a couple questions and informed that I would bring my own board games. At home, I prepared the movie by downloading it with subtitles and made a post on teams; assigning roles and duties. This took a horrendously long time to do (5-7) because I was trying to figure out the subtitles. It ended up being for naught although.
During the day of the event, I went to find Mr. Lu after shooting an email the day prior. I picked up 5 games from the business wing and 7 of my own. I left with Alexia and Morgan 20 minutes before the event started to set up the movie, music, tables, games, and the speaker/mic.
During the Event:
The first 9 minutes of the event was hectic as the line outside the library grew and Ms. MacPherson hadn’t arrived yet. Finley went out to find the missing supervisor. When Ms. MacPherson arrived, everyone on the bar quickly scrambled to work. I started playing the music and asked Ms. Macpherson for help with the microphone. After connecting, I consulted Morgan and Alexia if I should start speaking into the mic and got the green light. I MC’d to let people know that the board games are available to use and opened up with a lighthearted introduction to kindle the atmosphere. This also relates to the competency as I tried to help nurture the 9s towards their goals of having a fun time by promoting a casual environment. For the first bit, I just asked questions about floater duties to relay to other leadership students: which was to interact and play with the 9s. I also assisted Natesh with his station in crushing Oreos as he was unsure how to do so whilst serving. However, when leadership started getting their portions, I became more involved in serving. I announced that seconds were available and made a couple jokes with a student who was rushing. I served the leadership students, Ms. Close, Mr. Rao, as well as the second wave of 9 students. Afterwards I assisted a little bit with the cleanup of the tables, but Emilio and Ms. MacPherson take MVP in cleaning up the table. I helped pack the ice cream and other materials into the bags and rolled the mic back. I took pictures throughout the event and a video and talked about a niche game with one of the 9s.
Cleanup:
I assisted in the takedown of chairs, games, and posters. I returned Mr. Lu’s games and left shortly afterwards.
Actions Taken & Evidence:
- During the lunchtime meeting, I took an initiative role as a leader to assist in nurturing other group member’s ambition for their goal of productivity. I contributed ideas, wrote and invited other members to a document, and stayed behind to understand the assignment further.
- I assisted in strengthening the ambition to have a successful event by planting ideas and leaded in creating a plausible image of what it would look like. In doing so, it began the steps to achieved the shared goal of a productive and successful event.
- I took on a bigger role in the Afterschool event to assist Alexia; which helped nurture her ambition for her goal attaining her goal of a successful event.
- I noticed that Alexia was having a hard time managing the event, so I stepped up to take extra responsibility to ease some pressure off her. Taking on an extra role of responsibility made it easier for Alexia to focus on other aspects of Grade 9 day, further strengthening her ambition to have a overall successful event.
- I noticed that the sundae bar was unmanned and took the initiative to cover and assist other students in nurturing their goal of having a successful event; by them being able to talk/play games with the 9s.
- I took on the empty station to cover and further promote the ambition of the other peers to by relieving them of their post to interact with the 9s through conversation and games. This let the other students achieve goals of creating meaningful connections and enjoyable moments with the 9th graders.
