Grade 8 walk-abouts
I participated in the Grade 8 Walkabouts by helping to facilitate a group of Grade 8 students through a set of stations throughout the school. My role was to inform the students about the significance of each station, explain the activities, and ensuring everyone was included and comfortable. I also stayed in contact with the other leaders to make sure the event would run smoothly and that any questions that the students had regarding what was of concern to them were addressed. My focus was on Communication, which relates to course outcomes such as effective communication, collaboration, and listening. I met with the other leaders before the event so we could map out the activities and how we would explain each station to the students. I helped coordinate the materials that were needed and ensured we had a well-laid plan for every station. During the event, I led the students through every one of the stations, explaining the instructions in detail and answering any questions they might have had. I helped the other leaders ensure all the students were engaged and part of the activity. Next, I helped facilitate a debrief with the event coordinators to review the proceedings of the event and identify areas for improvement. As evidence, I helped clarify the rules of the activities to a group of Grade 8 students and made sure they understood the tasks and would participate. I also helped coordinate with other leaders to make sure there was good communication between stations to make sure everything ran smoothly. Lastly, I listened to students’ grievances, solving their problems and adjusting accordingly, which demonstrated that I was capable of adapting my communication style to situations.
