1. Something learnt during event:
Something very important I learned during this event was to communicate and plan more with tech crew and non-leadership students that help out with our events. With Chami and Jaden leaving Pinetree, the responsibility of tech crew has split into a larger team. This has made us realize that as a team we need to communicate thoroughly with each member outside of leadership on multiple occasions to make sure both parties on track. A big issue that came up the day of the event was people in tech crew having inconsistent info about how we planned to run out event. When I talked with the team afterwords, they said it was because some of their crew had learned about our most updated plans the day before the event, whereas some members only knew of the original plan we had in mind. This caused discrepancies between leadership and tech crew backstage, and although the event ended up running well, the discrepancies still caused some stress and confusion backstage that could have been avoided. How we could improve for next time could be by scheduling meetings with the entirety of tech crew as supposed to contacting with a few people and hoping for them to pass on the word to the rest of their team. This way everyone would be on board with the plan, and as we make changes everyone would be consistently updated.
2. Something I’m proud of:
Managing 2 jobs + leadership + Full AP science Workload + Running Club + Almost Finishing university and scholarship applications + finding time to exercise + Pinetree Swag Crew. Although this semester has been the busiest by far, I was able to utilize my time management skills to create a detailed schedule and routine for myself in the middle of all the chaos going on.
3. Participation and relation to course goals
– was able to identify positive and negative leadership qualities. During moments of conflict between tech crew and leadership, I focused on finding a common ground where both of goals would be satisfied rather than siding with one group. An example was when a drama group wanted to do a 3 minute performance, but we had originally given each group 20 seconds. This caused some confusion and frustration, because the the drama group had prepared for a 3 minute event and were only finding out this info the day before. So instead of denying them and limiting the group to 20 seconds, I recognized that there was significant effort put into their performance, and that limiting their time would not only cause them disappointment, but would potentially also reduce the entertainment value for the event. So by taking that step to find common ground with that group and add some extra time to their performance while keeping everyone else at their original time, we were able to resolve the conflict at hand, and thoroughly interoperate their choreography in our event
4. Bonus – what did you add extra? Who did you work well with?
This event I took extra time to stay after meetings to help out with the stressful tasks the point people were dealing with, and giving advice to newer leadership members. Considering that it was the first time being PP for our group leaders, I found that staying after meetings to help plan for the future and discuss potential risks that I’ve seen before in past events helped solidify our plans and uplift our teams confidence. Even though I had not taken a point person role this month, I focused on delivering advice based on past experience s and conflicts that I’ve faced. A main example would be being able to manage the flow of sequences on the day of an event (basically time management). I encouraged the MC’s and point people to try to eliminate as much extra or filler time between each performance, due to the possibility of delays. Because I spent that extra time to speak with the MC’s and the Point people, we were able to build stronger connections, allowing us to work well together during stressful moments.
EXTRA EVENTS:
September: Was assigned to Grade 9 orientations, but also ended up helping with picture day to the crew being understaffed.
October: Helped out with Pinetree Way Elementary Volleyball Tournament Reffing. (2 dates, October 21st and November 4th)
Although I applied to many other extra Event opportunities, I understand that due to the high demand, the selection process was done so that everyone could have an equal opportunity to participate in each event. So Instead of participating in lots of extra events, i redirected my focus into the Pinetree Swag Crew to help recreate the merchandise line for the school.
