Spirit Assembly

Spirit Assembly (September 18, 2024)

Event Participation:

For Pinetree’s 2024 Spirit Assembly, I was grateful to be the emcee. Along with Yuju as emcee, I worked with teachers and other Leadership members to run the Spirit Assembly.

My role began with making the emcee script. Yuju and I worked mainly outside of school to work on it, trying to figure out what would bring out the Pinetree spirit in the beginning of the year. Sending emails to the teachers participating in the lip-sync as well, I put together a script which included elements of humor and hype.

During the actual event, my biggest focus was on the event running smoothly and on time. It took a lot of time for all the students to pile in to the gym, so I had to (softly) give them directions to scooch in closer or pile in together. While speaking to the crowd, I had my focus on speaking with clarity as well as getting the students hyped up for events. I saw myself cutting a lot of the actual script to make it more concise, as we were starting to run out of time. For the hyping-up, I found that my voice tone needed to be overly enthusiastic for the crowd to match my energy, thus tried to maintain a high-tone. Overall, I think the crowd was engaged throughout the event and many notified me how it was an entertaining experience.

Curricular Competency and Actions Taken:

Though many competencies were in place during the event, I saw myself strengthening Theme 4 the most. As this was a school-wide event, I had to communicate with various people, from sound/tech crew to the crowd themselves. A specific competency I improved significantly on was: developing listening skills needed to be a positive leader and active listener. As an emcee for this event, I had many people come up to me before and during the event for various needs. The performers for the lip-sync battle had questions on their placement, and other leadership students had questions on what their task should be. Through this, I learned that to be a leader, I not only need to be fully understanding of my individual tasks, but the tasks of the whole group. In this specific scenario, I learned that I had to know more than just my designated role and script, but the overall flow of all events. This is something I will try to strengthen for the next event.

Another specific competency I strengthened was: developing communication strategies with members of the class when verbal conversations might not be possible. This was mostly done during the assembly with Yuju, where I made multiple nonverbal hand signs at her to communicate with her. Though I do not know how many of those went through, we seemed to be able to communicate through our hands, effectively leading the assembly.
