April Event- Grade 11 Day

April Event – Grade 11 Day
Event Date: April 16th

Event Participation:
Grade 11 Day on April 16th was a fun and memorable event designed to celebrate the grade 11 students after school. It was exciting to be a part of the organizing team for such a lively event. The theme was ‘glow in the dark,’ which made the event feel energetic and vibrant. Everyone had glow sticks into a darkened space with music playing, which was creating a unique and engaging atmosphere. My role involved participating to the planning process and helping with the setup, execution, and cleanup of the event. Before the Event, I participated in all the meetings leading up to the day, actively engaging in planning how the space would be used, what decorations to prepare, and how to run the ticket raffle. On the day of the event, I arrived early to the cafeteria to help decorate. I made sure everything was organized and ready before the students arrived. During the Event, as students began to arrive, I was in charge of greeting them, handing out glow sticks, and collecting names for the ticket raffle. I stayed organized and friendly and was making sure everyone received what they needed and that the process moved smoothly. After the Event, when the event wrapped up, I stayed behind to help clean up. I assisted in removing the decorations, organizing leftover food, and ensuring the space was returned to its original state. Though I was tired by the end, I was happy knowing I had contributed to the entire event from start to finish.

Curricular Competency:
I demonstrated and identified individual accountability while working within a team
This competency connects to my leadership goals.

Creating a Positive Team Environment: I made an effort to ensure everyone’s voice was heard throughout the planning process. For instance, I invited opinions from quieter team members during our early meetings and made sure their ideas were included in our final plan.

Improving Listening Skills: During our discussions, I focused on actively listening rather than just waiting to speak. When someone suggested the glow stick idea, I helped build on that by proposing how we could distribute them and make the lighting work with the music for maximum effect.

Balancing Responsibilities: At the time, I was also managing academic responsibilities, including test preparation. I learned to manage my time more effectively by using a planner and prioritizing tasks each day. This helped me fulfill my duties without falling behind in school.

Actions Taken:
Before the Event:
I attended all planning meetings and actively participated in planning the event.
I arrived early on the day to help set up decorations in the cafeteria.

During the Event:
I greeted students and handed out glow sticks as they arrived.
I organized and collected names for the raffle to ensure it ran smoothly.

After the Event:
I stayed to help clean up food, remove decorations, and restore the cafeteria.
I made sure nothing was left behind and the space was ready for the next day.

Evidence of My Efforts:

Example 1 –
I helped decorate the cafeteria before the event began, setting up glow-in-the-dark tape and preparing the prize draw table. This ensured the event had an exciting atmosphere and was ready before the students arrived.

Example 2 –
As students walked in, I distributed glow sticks and collected raffle names in an organized way and was making sure no one was missed. This helped keep the event fun but orderly and showed my ability to handle a fast paced environment.

Example 3 –
After most people had left, I stayed to clean up. I helped organize leftover snacks and remove decorations without being asked.

Reflection:
Looking back, I’m proud of how I contributed to this event. Even though it was a long day, I stayed committed and enthusiastic from start to finish. I learned how important it is to take initiative and be dependable, especially when others are counting on you. I also realized how valuable small acts of leadership can be, like organizing names or cleaning up afterward. These efforts may seem small,  but they help create a positive experience for everyone. In the future, I want to continue building strong teamwork and planning skills, since I know these will support me in school, in leadership roles, and beyond.
