When I first started this program, I was both very excited and anxious as Leadership students have a great reputation for exhibiting traits like taking initiative and being confident, which at the time I had not gained those skills. However, I believed my qualities of being observant and responsible could contribute to events in different ways. Therefore, for the first half of the course, I mainly operated things behind the scenes to gain more experience and learn from my peers, where I used my Arts & Crafts Club to make Halloween decorations, created promotional materials with my peers for Spirit Week, and in general helped set up for events. I took a more passive role was also because of my lack of confidence, so I made it my goal to take on larger leadership roles in the upcoming term and hopefully gain more leadership skills to help my confidence. In this effort to be more proactive, I joined the Student Ambassador program outside of the main Leadership events, where I was able to utilize my linguistic skills to help give tours to international students, which marks the first step in my active search for opportunities to help out as much as possible.
As I progressed through the course, I became more acquainted with both the Leadership environment and also the people surrounding me. Nevertheless, I still have much to improve on in terms of being a leading person. As a result, I signed up for extra events like Grade 8 Tours and more Student Ambassador tours to become more comfortable projecting my voice to communicate. Along the way, I gained more communication skills by having to contact different people to accomplish tasks and improved my initiative. After gaining much more experience, I decided to apply to become a point person for Spring Fling, which I unfortunately did not become. However, after the cancellation of that event, I tried to make up for my inactivity by contributing as much as possible to Culture Day, where I was truly able to apply all the skills I have learnt to be a major participant. The limited amount of time given to both research about cultures and write scripts called for my time-management skills. The constant liaising with my fellow MC and point people required communication skills. Lastly, going on stage to host an event in front of the entire school warranted confidence and public speaking skills. All of this accumulated to me being a vital part of the event and I felt accomplishment up on the stage.
Through this course, I was able to evolve from being shy and timid, someone who is unwilling to do anything out of the line, to trying out new things in hopes of being involved more, engrossing myself more deeply in how events unfold. This growth has also aided my mindset outside of Leadership activities, where I am less doubtful of my every action and willing to take more risks to learn new skills and test my capabilities. Although I sadly did not get to officially lead as a point person and still have much for growth, I managed to achieve a part of my goal of taking on a larger role. I am very grateful for all the opportunities I was offered and be able to grow in terms of both being a leader and an individual.
