In this year’s Spirit Assembly, I was glad to be a part of the Stations Crew, responsible for creating and managing the stations and events that took place during the assembly.
To start, I was eager to be involved in Stations, even though I wasn’t a point person. In the planning stage, there were some decisions to be made regarding which activities we would choose, but we decided on three final ones which were very successful. Before the assembly took place, I assisted the point people in organizing and finalizing the details for each activity and setting up the activities like musical chairs, tug of war, and balloon hop. As the station I was assigned to was Musical Chairs, I put out the chairs and practiced arranging them with the rest of my groupmates. We decided on the formations and timing, and we were good to go.
As the first batch of students started to roll in, I was getting excited and quickly began encouraging the students and cheering them on, hoping to get them excited as well. I was implementing effective communication during this stage, as security and hype crew were spread out across the gym.
When the stations began, I made sure to quickly alert all the group members to be ready for the musical chairs. We had some hiccups at the beginning, as many students who were not part of hype crew were selecting students to come up and participate. More effective communication skills could have been used here, but we managed to get the game going smoothly for the most part. When musical chairs wrapped up, I hurriedly cleaned up the chairs and began to assist more stations members in preparing for tug of war.
Through this Spirit Assembly, I was able to work in a high-pressure environment, effectively communicate, and problem solve when conflicts did arise. Overall, I think the Spirit Assembly went very smooth and I am proud to have been part of the preparation and stations crew.
