Remembrance Day – November 8th 2024

General Task Summary

I attended both prior meetings for the event:

  • First meeting: We discussed and distributed roles for the event and clarified the procedures for the day. I offered to assist with crowd control and handing out poppies alongside Lincoln.
  • Second meeting: We finalized our roles and discussed strategies for spreading the word and advertising the assembly. I volunteered to help with advertising on the Wednesday prior to the event. However, due to missing some tests in other classes, I was unable to assist my group members in going class to class.

Despite the limited number of meetings, I prioritized paying close attention to all details in the instructions provided. I also ensured that I clarified uncertainties, such as:

  • The direction of traffic flow and the specific points where students would need to enter and exit.
  • Our positions during the assembly, not just during active tasks but also while on standby, and the cues to reengage with our roles.

This preparation allowed me to confidently handle my responsibilities during the event.

Goal Setting, Curricular Competencies, and Evidence (Involvement continued)

One of my main goals for this event was to demonstrate strong communication skills with my group members and the larger student body. This was particularly important when directing traffic. I ensured that students entering the venue were instructed to move and compact themselves to create adequate space for everyone. Often, this required raising my voice and addressing students directly. Even when these students were friends, I maintained a consistent and authoritative tone, ensuring instructions were followed effectively.

On the day of the event:

  • I arrived on time and immediately checked in with Ms. McPherson and Horace (our point person).
  • After verifying my role with Horace, I assisted others with their tasks since I had no immediate responsibilities.
  • Before the event began, I helped set up chairs and completed additional tasks such as handing out poppies to participants, relaying messages between team members and Horace, and frequently retrieving and refilling the poppy basket.

One of my curricular competencies for this event was understanding and using effective decision-making skills as part of Theme 2: Self-Awareness and Personal Leadership. Over the past three months in leadership, I’ve observed that students often finish assigned tasks but then wait to be reassigned roles. Similarly, I’ve noticed that some group members take on too much work, which can create an unnecessary mental burden.

To address this, I focused on maintaining my routines leading up to the event, including getting proper rest and eating well. During the event, I consistently supported my group members by stepping into roles when needed. For example:

  • Taking over crowd control duties when necessary.
  • Relaying messages across the gym.
  • Constantly refilling and distributing poppies to ensure smooth operations.

I believe this event was my most successful in terms of stepping up, taking initiative, and achieving efficient results within the given time frame.

Actions Taken and Aftermath

After the event, I noticed some band members putting away heavy equipment. I, along with some of my group members, took the initiative to assist them in carrying items such as bleachers and music stands back to the band room. A memorable moment was teaching younger band members the basic principles of leverage, which helped them move heavier items more efficiently (e.g., by rolling items on tires).

By contributing to the cleanup, I ensured that the event’s success extended beyond its conclusion, leaving the space in good condition and supporting the band students.

Extra Evidence and Reflections

  • This photo shows some of the planning that we had conducted in previous meetings, and how we chose to split apart our tasks for the event. I think that everyone was very open to a variety of roles for this event, as we all understand the importance of planning everything quickly, given our limited time.

  • This next photo includes all the members who participated in the assembly and was taken at the beginning of the day, just as we started our tasks. Everyone dressed appropriately and showed immense respect for the event.
  • Overall, I think this event went extremely well, and I strongly believe I showed growth by stepping out my comfort zone and choosing this event.
    • Even though some of my other friends had chosen to do Grade-9 day, and encouraged me to join, I chose this event because I had made it a goal to tackle tasks where i had the fear of messing up and making mistakes.
      • Throughout the past I’ve learned that avoiding these mistakes has always led to a lack of experience and knowledge, and when i inevitably have to do those tasks, I always psych myself out because of the poor mentality I’ve possessed. This event allowed me to gain more confidence and experience through my crowd control roles, whilst also utilizing different leader styles to complete various tasks. – Theme 2: Self-Awareness and Personal Leadership
      • Therefore, I believe that I was really able work on a variety of my core competencies regardless of the limited time we had for this event.
