EVENTS SUMMARY

Growth From September

Since the start of leadership, I think the idea of improving my abilities and learning as much skills as possible had been the biggest appeal for me. I knew that if I wanted to do this I would need to not only participate as much as possible, but put in authentic and intentional effort into almost everything I would do in the program. I knew that if I wanted to really come out with strong experience and skills, I would need to value the course like any other and put in the necessary time to get those results. When I say put in “as much time as possible” I don’t mean do absolutely every single event in the entire program, but rather do the events that would help me learn to focus, communicate, and work under pressure. Participating in the Remembrance day event was a main/specific example achieving this because considering the formality of the event and how little room for error there was, I knew that it would be a good learning opportunity and a contrast to the previous high energy school-spirit related events. I believe the crucial skills that I obtained from the first half of the year were:

  • Clarify misconceptions or miscommunications as early as possible
  • Ask important questions and don’t be afraid to ask for clarification on vague details provided by others
  • Be focused during crucial / delicate tasks
  • Take mandatory breaks to prevent short term burnout and stress.
  • Don’t be afraid to spring to help even if a personal task Isn’t completed yet
    • A specific example was at the end of the event, where I was wrapping some wires and I noticed a few grade 9’s struggling to carry some bleachers. Now in a perfect world I would say I went over there and carried everything on my back supper-man style, but that would’ve been completely unnecessary as all I needed to do was show then how to leverage the stands and wheel them off the ground. This leads to another take away of how direct-intervention and ‘doing’ work for others is unnecessary at times. The whole point of having a large crew for various events is to increase efficiency by combining various skills. And I believe being able to give quick tips or teach a skill on-the-go can be more valuable then taking work from others and trying to run a one-man-show. I know from personal experience and I can safely say there like no benefit from trying to that, It lead to annoying the group and can just make the whole process slower. I think having having the ability to slow down to teach rather than ‘just do’, is an essential skill I could transfer over to future careers and especially in a work environment.

For the second half of the year, there was more application and taking action with the skills I obtained first semester.Ā  After my first point person

I think Grade 10 Day was the most planning heavy and detail oriented event of the year. I think the main factor that Lincoln and I focused on was being able to get an appealing and fun idea for the 10’s. And knowing the wild nature and tendencies of the 10’s, we knew that it the idea had to be good. So we thought “what would be an high stakes, heart-racing, and addictive activity that the 10’s would miss? Gambling šŸ”„ . Out of all seriousness though, events like grade 10 day helped me understand the importance of planning ahead of time and directly asking our target audience about what they really wanted for an event. This also helped form trust and a mutual connection between a lot of the 10’s, and essentially guaranteed us ticket sales before they we had event started marketing. A big takeaway from the marketing aspect of this event was treating each grade 10 as an individual and not just spewing the exact same message to everyone and waiting for a yes/no response. Asking everyone specifically for what they might enjoy in an event, and being able to mention aspects or parts of interests helps gain interest quickly, and when this happens people begin to tell their friends and a whole chain reaction of sales occurs after the first few days. This ‘tactic’ not only helped me with my marketing for grade 10 day, but events like movie under the stars and grade 11 day as well.Ā

In the end , I was able to also complete my term 2 goals by having a consistently schedules google calendar that helped my stay on task of all my events, and I believe it was something that helped me organize myself in non-school related aspects of my life. Overall I loved being in leadership this year, and I believe the people I met and the memories I made will be memorable than any heavy academic course I took this year. I hope that I will be able to continue learning and growing my skills in leadership next year!
