November Event- Parent Teacher Interviews

November Event: Parent-Teacher Interviews (November 28, 2024)

Event Participation: For the Parent-Teacher Interviews, I went to the only meeting where Vy went over the plan regarding the event, where I volunteered to help with the traffic in the beginning of the event. For the first 20 minutes of the event, I had volunteered to help stand outside the school and direct parents where to park their vehicles. During this time, I stood outside with Alice and Vy, informing parents that if they chose to park here, they would have to pay a parking fee. I was informed that I was moved to cover the lower A wing instead of the foyer. During my time working on the lower A wing, I directed lost parents to where the class they were looking for is, I went up to parents and offered any assistance they needed and creeated small talk with some of them while they were waiting. During the quieter times of the afternoon, I decided to study for my math test, conviently there was a table that I could work on, while still being visible to parents if assistance is needed.

Curricular Competency: Be a visible and confident leader within the school/community (Theme 2: Self-awareness and personal leadership)

How this competency aligns with my course goals:

  •  Walking up to and assisting parents who looked “lost” or “confused” with where they were suppose to be: I actively scanned the area who appeared unsure or seemed to be looking around for direction. When I noticed someone who looked lost or confused, I approached them with a friendly demeanor, asking if they needed any assistance. I provided parents with specific, easy-to-follow directions and ensured they knew where to go.
  • Confidently answering questions parents had regarding the interviews, parking, etc: I made sure to be well aware with information about the events such as parking and location. When parents asked me about interview times, I let them know that sometimes the interviews go over the time range and not too worry. If parents had questions about the parking, I let them know to park over the over-pass, and if they decided to park at the Pinetree Community Center they would have to pay a parking fee.
  • Creating an inclusive atmosphere: I actively made eye contact with parents as I interacted with them to ensure that they felt welcome. I presented myself in an approachable way, ensuring parents know that I am here for assistance. During the quieter times, I would approach parents verbally and inform them if they had any questions I would be more than happy to answer them.

Actions taken:

Before: Before the event I attended the only meeting we had, where Vy (our point person) informed us on where we would be standing and overall roles. During our meeting, I volunteered to help direct traffic on the day of event, which I would be doing for the first 20 minutes of the event.

During: During the event, I first got my name tag and then I stood outside the school directing parents where to park, parking payment and where the entrance is. After 20 minutes, I headed inside to my designated location which was the lower A wing, where my partner Arisa stood by the English classrooms and I stood by the Social Studies classrooms. I presented myself in a postive manner by approaching any parents who seemed confused or lost and offering my assistance and letting myself be seen to all parents if they had any questions.

After: After the event, I made sure nothing by the parents were left on the floor and seats. I had also assisted a few parents on how to leave the building and any last questions they had.  After confirming nothing was left and there were no more parents in my area, I headed to the foyer for a group photo.

Evidence:

  • I approached parents who seemed lost or confused on where they were going and offered my help.  I created small talk with the parents while showing them to the classroom they were looking for. This aligns with my course goal of improving my communcation skills, by interacting with parents, understanding their needs, and guiding them to theclasses.
  • I directed parents on where to park, informing them if they park at the Pinetree Comunity Center requires a fee. Instead, I adivised them to use the free parking avaliable that was located across the overpass. This helped ensure a smoother experience for the parents and save them from unnecessary costs.
  • I maintained clear communication with my fellow group members throughout the night to ensure the event ran smoothly and all the parents knew where to go. If I saw a floater in the hallway, I coordinated with them to assist parents by directing them to classrooms outside my area. Similarly, if a floater needed help with a parent looking for a room in the lower A-wing, I stepped in to guide them. This teamwork and coordination ensured that parents received assistance and contributed to the success of the event!
