Event Participation – Movie Under the Stars
For this month’s event, I served as one of the point people for Movie Under the Stars. As a point person, my responsibilities included directing, leading, and providing guidance to my group members, as well as assigning tasks.
Our planning began with a group discussion where my partners and I shared our ideas and goals for the event, since this was our first time ever running it. We made collaborative decisions as a team, and I made sure to actively listen and consider everyone’s input. The other point people and I organized meetings to keep the team aligned with our plan. During these meetings, we discussed marketing and reels, food details, and sometimes even worked on decorations together.
As the event approached we realized we were quite behind on preparing which made us all stressed, so we quickly put our foot on the pedel and began to work. Baran helped with the marketing aspect of this event (reels and posters), while we all played roles in helping with the execution of the event. As the event date approached, we created a schedule for ticket sales, ensuring a point person was present each day. I helped sell tickets on the Wednesday before the event, while Baran and Tara covered the other days. We also designed an eye-catching, abstract poster board to promote the event. Huge shoutout to Dowar and Lincoln for helping Tara and me with the poster, they played a major role in making it look as appealing as it did!
I also organized a meeting where we assembled candy bags, ensuring each one was evenly packed. On the day of the event, Tara, Dowar, and I finished preparing and storing the bags. We assisted Chami and his partner in setting up the big screen for the movie. At 5:30 p.m., the rest of the group arrived, and we directed them on their roles and responsibilities, finalizing our final game plan.
Doors opened at 6:45 p.m., and as students began to arrive, I walked around to ensure everything was running smoothly. I even got to be on aux for a while, which was a lot of fun! After the event, we all pitched in for clean-up—putting away tables, picking up garbage, and restoring the area to its original condition.
A special thank you to Tara, Yusef, Aya, Khadija, Brendon, and I for cleaning the very dirty popcorn machine! We all worked as a team and cleaned the popcorn machine as if it was brand new!
Although we had a rocky start, the event turned out to be a great success! Our team was incredibly supportive, and we couldn’t have pulled it off without their creativity, teamwork, and dedication.Special thanks to Mr. Mac and Ms. Rioux for their raw feedback, which really motivated us to push ourselves and do better.
Curricular Competency and how it aligns with my course goal: · Identify and develop various roles/responsibilities within a group.
- By listening to others ideas and taking them into consideration during planning, which strengthened my ability to collaborate and connect ideas.
- By being apart of a team and stepping into a leadership role, I began to overcome my tendency to keep to myself.
- Assisting in organizing meetings, distrubuted tickets and ensured my group members understood the overall plan of the event and their assigned roles.
Actions Taken: Explain what you did to work towards or achieve this competency.
Before:
- I collobarated with the other point people and our group to brainstorm ideas and outline the goals for the event.
- I assigned roles to the Wednesday selling group to ensure we would get more sales.
- I helped design an eye-catching poster board with the help from Tara, Dowar, and Lincoln, which helped attract attention.
During:
- I confirmed and further elaborated on my group members roles and responsibilities once they arrived, making sure the event will run smoothly.
- I assisted in creating the final candy bags with Dowar and Tara.
- I remained present throughout the event, ensuring the event was running smoothly and there was no complications.
After:
- I reflected on the experience by acknowledging what went well and what needed growth.
- I participated in putting away the tables, collecting garbage left on the ground, and ensuring the space looked exactly how it was prior to the event.
- I helped cleaned the popcorn machine. I worked alongside with Tara, Yusuf, Aya, Brendon and Khadija to remove the grease and thoroughly clean the inside of the machine.
Evidence: Provide strong, concrete examples of your efforts and achievements. Ensure your leadership teacher can understand this evidence.
- I organized and helped lead group meetings with the other point people where we discussed our goals, assigned tasks, and worked through the logistics of the event. This shows my ability to identify roles (like creating candy bags, ticket selling, decorators, set-up/clean-up crews) and develop responsibilities by making sure everyone had a job that matched their strengths. It also helped build my communication and leadership skills two of my course goals.
-
Although Baran created the ticket sales schedule, I helped by selling tickets on Wednesday and making sure things were organized and running smoothly at the table. This highlights my willingness to step into a group role and take initiative when needed. It shows that I could work within the structure of our group and contribute in a way that supported our shared goal. It also gave me a chance to interact with students, which helped me grow in my sales-person skills, confidence and communication.
- On the day of the event, I helped direct our group members when they arrived at 5:30. I explained their responsibilities, answered questions, and made sure everyone was confident in their role before doors opened. This emphasized my developing roles within a group and taking on a leadership position. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me become more confident in using my voice directly supporting my goal of being more a confident and leadership throughout this course.
