December Event – Talent Show

Event DateFriday, December 20th, 11:00am-12:45pm (Block 3 – extended Lunch)

Event Participation: Briefly describe your involvement from start to finish.

For the Talent Show, I took on two roles, Marketing and Talent Manager. Initially during the first meeting with the Point People, I volunteered to do Marketing as I had never done it before. I created two posters advertising the audition for the Talent Show, with main focus on making the poster attractive but simple. I mainly used the color red as it is an eye-attracting color often associated with shows and special events. I also created an Instagram reel advertising the main event. I attended all meetings, in which I was told I would be the Talent Manager for Clara Norena. I immediately contacted her through TEAMS, ensuring she had everything she needed before the event.

On the day of the event, I went down to the cafeteria at around 11:00am for the soundcheck. As the schedule was a bit delayed, I notified Clara that her soundcheck may occur a bit later than expected. While waiting, I moved all backpacks of Leadership students closer to the stage, to maximize the area where students can view the Talent Show. After a successful soundcheck, I notified Clara of the location she would be waiting at before her performance. For the duration of the event, I stayed backstage with other Leadership students and encouraged/congratulated all performers. I constantly checked if Clara needed anything, and made sure to cheer her on the way. In between some of the performances, set changes were necessary, leading me to go on stage to make the shifts. I made sure to check with each performer before they went on, ensuring all the materials needed for their show was in place.

After the event, I stayed to clean up what was left on stage. The majority of the clean up was based on the band setup and mics, along with a few Taekwondo wood boards. As I have been in Band since Grade 9, I knew where most of the microphone stands, amps, and drum kits went. This led to many Leadership students asking me where to put certain items, which I answered to the best of my memory (I asked Mr. DeVita for the parts I was unsure). Overall, I really enjoyed the hyped-up atmosphere and the collaborative effort it took to organize the event!

Curricular Competency: State which competency you focused on, aligning it with your course goals.

Curricular Competency: Theme 4 – Create diverse and interesting announcements, posters, and other media to get information to the student body or intended people

  • This aligns with my course goal of becoming a well-rounded leader that has many strengths, as being familiar with multiple forms of communication is crucial. Knowing how to utilize multiple advertisement types comes in handy when spreading information about events.
  • I created multiple forms of announcements for the Talent Show, creating two eye-attracting posters and an Instagram reel, as well as explored verbal advertisement as well.
  • By recognizing the significance of communication,
    • I explored different forms of media to spread information
    • I enhanced my public speaking skills by advertising the Talent Show verbally to others

Actions Taken: Explain what you did to work towards or achieve this competency.

Before Event: To advertise that auditions for the Talent Show was open, I created two different types of posters to hang around the school, putting emphasis on gaining attention. As I understood that the target audience for the advertisement was the student body, I made it as eye-catching and less-wordy as possible, using the colors red and yellow to attract attention. I made the posters on the day it was assigned, to ensure everything ran smoothly and efficiently. I also created an Instagram reel prior to the event, further exploring different methods of announcements.

During Event: Verbal communication/announcement was the most prominent action I took to achieve the competency. While I was setting up the cafeteria for the Talent Show (moving cones to set up the camera for the livestream), there were many students passing by. I made an effort to announce that there would be a Talent Show at lunch, and to bring friends to watch the show. During the actual Talent Show, I actively communicated with performers on what they needed on stage, so that I could immediately take-down/set-up materials needed for the next performance. This ensured that the show ran on time without much delay.

After Event: Similar to during the actual event, I utilized verbal communication the most during clean-up. As I was the one who knew where the music-related items went, I shared this information by clearly articulating where everything went to my peers. I also aided in putting down the posters of the advertisements, as I recognized this as an act of ending off the whole event.

Conclusion: Through creating and utilizing diverse types of advertisements, I learned the significance of promoting an event, and how media can be a strong asset when it comes to gathering attention.

Evidence: Provide strong, concrete examples of your efforts and achievements. Ensure your leadership teacher can understand this evidence.

  • Two posters and Instagram reel (before event)
    • Immediately after assigned, I started up two versions of the poster to advertise the auditions for the Talent Show. I made sure to include the QR Code for both posters, as this seemed to attract the attention of students easily. I sent the created posters off to my Point Person first, checking if it suited the Talent Show theme and received feedback as well. I then sent it off to the TEAMs, for feedback from the teachers.
  • Encouraging Backstage (during event)
    • I directed performers of the Talent Show from their backstage location (Room 789) to the Drama Room. Before they went on stage, I gave them words of encouragements and additionally high-fived each of them as they completed their stage. I made sure to communicate frequently to the performers before going up, checking if they needed last-minute materials or how they were doing in general.
  • Cleaning Up Cables (after event)
    • After the show, I cleaned up the microphone cables and stands, taking initiative immediately. I moved back on forth from the stage to the band room, notifying peers of where to put each music item. I also helped move the piano in between performances, and after the performance. I was one of the last people to leave.
