Event Date: Wednesday, April 16th, 2:05pm-5:00pm (Afterschool)
Event Participation: Briefly describe your involvement from start to finish.
Due to being out of the country, I couldn’t contribute much to the beginning stages of the event. However, I was able to catch up quickly through constantly being updated on TEAMS, as well as through friends. I quickly identified where I could help, selling tickets out of the blue as the Point People requested additional support. I ended up selling tickets for three days in a row, advertising to Grade 11s in the foyer, collecting cash, and handing out tickets. I also stayed afterschool to decorate the foyer board and blow up balloons a few days prior to the event.
On the day of the event, I went down to the cafeteria at around 2:00pm to setup. We started by clearing away all the tables in the cafeteria, as this space would be used for various events. I then started setting up my area (I was Security): placing the tables to the front of the cafeteria entrance, folding the raffle tickets, and getting the list of names. After this was done, I helped around with taking out the candies as well as putting up posters for the activities.
During the actual event, I acted as Security throughout the afternoon. Jayden checked off the students entering, and I passed them the raffles, explaining how it worked. We stayed as enthusiastic as possible as the students entered, purposely creating a hyped environment. After all students entered, I stayed near the entrance to manage people coming and leaving, making sure everyone had a ticket. There were some latecomers, so I made sure to inform them of everything going on. During the event, there were a number of students (who hadn’t bought a ticket) eyeing for when I was preoccupied to try and enter, so I made sure to keep an extra eye on them.
After the event, I mainly cleaned up my station, returning the tables and throwing out the raffles and list. I then helped the other stations with cleanup, picking up garbage. I ended the cleanup by bringing out the tables back to its places in the cafeteria, making sure the correct table went to the correct spot (I found out there were both long and short tables).
Curricular Competency: State which competency you focused on, aligning it with your course goals.
Curricular Competency: Theme 2 – Be a visible and confident leader within the school/community.
- This aligns with my course goal of becoming a strong leader with many strengths, as leaders must be confident and firm when taking on tasks. They must take charge and be responsible to get the job done.
- I took charge in being firm when letting students in and out of the cafeteria, doing my duties as Security and speaking clearly. This ensured that everyone stayed safe and we had no intruders.
- By recognizing the significance of being a confident and visible leader,
- I communicated effectively by speaking with confident and clarity to Grade 11 students
- I strengthened my ability to finish tasks efficiently
Actions Taken: Explain what you did to work towards or achieve this competency.
Before Event: While selling the event tickets, I spoke with a confidence voice and presented myself in a positive stance. I clearly outlined what the event would be like and answered questions, gaining the attention of passing Grade 11s in the foyer. I kept myself organized and seen by the students, recording their names and placing the money into the cashbox.
During Event: To achieve this competency, I made sure to be firm with what I said during Security. As I recognized that I was to be the first impression the Grade 11s had on the event, I made sure to be over-enthusiastic and hyped up when greeting the 11s. I confidently handed out the necessary materials and explained where the raffles go, all while maintaining a smile and clear voice. Throughout the event, I remained stern towards the students trying to sneak in to the event. Though it was initially uncomfortable for me to be firm with students, I realized that there was a difference between being mean and being stern. I recognized that being strict is needed especially if I’m on Security, maintaining that as I manned the door.
After Event: To achieve this competency, I remained visible throughout the whole cleanup process. I made it clear to my teammates that if I could support them if needed, constantly eyeing them and asking them if they needed support. I was a confident leader when cleaning up the tables, as I recognized that some were being put into the wrong spots. The long tables had been set up in the center of the cafeteria, when it should’ve been near the sides – I corrected this and put it in its designated space along with other teammates.
Conclusion: Through being confident and stern, I realized that different roles exist within a team, and that it’s important to adapt to such role.
Evidence: Provide strong, concrete examples of your efforts and achievements. Ensure your leadership teacher can understand this evidence.
- Selling Tickets (before event)
- A week before the Grade 11 Day, I was a member for selling tickets in the foyer at lunch. I realized that there was a line usually at the beginning of lunch, so I made sure to be at the station a few minutes early to set up. For efficiency, I provided students with more than one line to buy tickets, which allowed them to pay quickly and go along with their lunch.
- Security (during event)
- As Security, I sat near the entrance for the full duration of the event, making sure everyone entering had a ticket. I gave each student raffle tickets telling them to write their names and put it in the big box, making sure everyone got their designated number. It was extremely crowded in the area in the beginning, so I had to say each statement quick and loud. As a result, my voice died a bit but everyone was able to hear what they had to 🔥.
- Cleaning Up Tables and Post-Event (after event)
- After the event, I brought out tables that were in the impulse room and dragged them down to the cafeteria. I made sure to cooperate with my other Leadership teammate moving the table, so that no injuries happened from this. Additionally, I contributed to the post-event discussion by stating some pros and cons of the event. I highlighted that the photobooth decorations were made extremely well – something to think about for next year.
