Introduction
I was part of the loud and proud hype crew in the Spirit Assembly this year in 2024. The jobs I partook in were choosing participants from the crowd for Tug-a-War, organizing the influx of students to the bleachers, and hyping up the participants and the crowd with cheers plus a bit of candy bribery.
Competency:
Theme 1: Principles of Leadership and Teamwork- The Importance of Team Players
Event Participation:
Before the students arrived, I assisted with the prepping of chairs along with communicating with other Hype Crew members the latest updates from our PP (Baran). Hype Crew were confused on what to do initially, but as the assembly began, we got our ball rolling.
When the assembly started taking root and students were piling in, I noticed that there was little to no order and absolute chaos as fellow students could not hear the instructions of other Leadership members very well. I wanted to help the security team with organizing the students as I realized being a team player is what the assembly really needed at that moment to run somewhat smoothly. So, I asked both Ms. Rioux and Ms. MacPherson as well as a security member, Vy, to see what information needed to be spread. I then yelled at the top of my lungs to grab the attention of passing students to direct them on where to go. I continued tearing my vocal cords in the second assembly as Ms. Rioux instructed a group of Leadership members to the bleachers as a physical line to separate the junior grades. Organized chaos is better than complete disarray ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
A challenge I found with my specified job though was choosing people for the Tug-A-War. Some other Leadership students told me to pick their friends, however I chose to pick students wearing their grade colors and were showing great spirit. This caused a bit of conflict between me and other leadership students but overall did not detract any relations. Another challenge I found was that students got up even though they weren’t chosen. I believe it was both through misunderstanding and self-choosing that led to excess students coming up. The blunder I made was from tunneling on only choosing people to get the ball moving rather than choosing and keeping an eye on who got up.
Overall, we managed to fight our way through the spirit assembly to make it work and it was a fun and useful learning experience as my first official event in Leadership 🙌.
Evidence and Actions:
I demonstrated the competency of learning the importance of team players by actively seeking how to help both my team and other teams on their respective duties after completing my own. I assisted security with my loud (kind of annoying) voice as well as being a physical barrier to separate the 9s and 10s. I don’t really have evidence for this other than a firsthand account from Vy and my voice MIA for a couple days.
