Introduction:

In this year’s spectacular Grade 10 Day event, I participated as part of the Media team as well as part of security and floaters. Dowar and Lincoln were very strong in their organization and planning, as the event was extremely successful and had little to no issues at all.

Theme 2: Self Awareness and Personal Leadership- Understand and use effective decision-making skills

Preparation:

During the meeting on the 29th of January, we discussed ideas on what to do on Grade 10 day and roles. I came up with some suggestions, such as running poker, but they weren’t greenlit.

On February 5th, the Media team and I brainstormed then filmed a promotional reel for the afterschool event. I brought up the idea of approaching a bored student wanting to have fun with Grade 10 Day tickets. Then I thought of referencing a show that was blowing up at the time (Squid Games 🦑) where two options are given. I thought this would be an effective decision as referencing a hot topic would make the advertisement more memorable. The rest of the reel was based off the combination of both ideas. Albeit I forgot to tell Shaan to add the music that referenced the show in the reel. This seemed to me like a mishap, however the message about Grade 10 Day was still conveyed properly.

On February 10th, I spontaneously went to assist with ticket selling as only Ethan was selling and I had unexpected free time after school. I didn’t bring my shirt as I joined in when school already started and Dowar told me it was fine if I didn’t wear a shirt.

On the 12th, Dowar and Lincoln gave us a final rundown and our roles for the event the week after. The Media team was assigned to figure out a reel to market Twin Day, and we executed it on February 14th. Admittedly, I did not participate much in the planning aspect of the reel as I was busy with personal matters regarding the 14th. Morgan and Angelina planned out the reel ideas and I came dressed up with Morgan to film.

During Day of Event (February 19th):

Prep of Event-

I was asking Mr. McDonald questions about the test we had the day after, and as a result I arrived slightly late at 2:45pm. Soon after, Dowar and Lincoln came to direct the floorplan. I assisted in table moving, chairs, ticket splitting, as well as setting up the security checkpoint. Afterwards, I took the initiative in a small yet notable task as I didn’t want to stand and do nothing. As I saw others were busy and/or idling, I thought that it would be effective to move fellow member’s bags onto the stage as the owners were busy. Leaving the bags out there could be harmful as it’s both a tripping hazard and potentially theft hazard if left alone throughout the event. After taking the initiative, the idling members came in to help me move the rest of the bags. I then stood at the door blocking entry as it was my duty to hold people outside until ready. However, I made the decision to let Band students go through as I thought it’d be effective both in the students retrieving their instruments and Leadership students’ image not to be negatively impacted.

Event Duration-

After the green light from Lincoln, the Security team + Brendon created a system in letting people in. Yousef would only let 2 people in at a time, while Jerome and I would sign 1 person and Brendon the other. Some issues were raised as there were students who wanted to pay upfront; but after communicating with Lincoln, we were given to green light to let them in. After the large wave of people came in, Brendon and Jerome made a master list of people who came in and out. I was stationed to stay at the door for any stragglers as the team dispersed to help out with other roles. I kept higher and lower grades out as some wanted to go in and join, but did not have money and weren’t permitted entry. After pizza arrived and students began to re-enter, I asked Dowar if I could help around other places as my job was basically redundant (I didn’t want to just stand around). He allowed me to become a floater and help where needed. But since I couldn’t find much help to give, I tried with Dowar to do interviews, but the students weren’t interested. As I again didn’t have much to do, I took photos of other Leadership students as I thought it would be an effective use of my time, as they were hard at work with their roles (ex. Matthew). I then noticed that Chami and his friend did not have a chance to get food yet. So, I took the initiative to help monitor their station while they were on break as I thought it’d be an effective use of my time. I kept some students away from the station, as they wanted to input songs, but Chami instructed only he and Dowar were allowed to touch it. I then helped a student win Blackjack, upping their morale as they were losing a lot, and returned cashed chips to the Blackjack stations. Near the end of the event, I assisted in announcing information and chip storage after cash-outs.

Cleanup/Concluding

After the rowdy event was over, I assisted in stacking and moving chairs. I set the tables back up and stacked the remaining chips into their cases. I posted pictures I took of the event afterwards on teams, ensuring that photo resources were available for other students.

In the Leadership meeting on the 26th, I actively participated in the event reflection to both promote further discussion and to state some strengths and shortcomings. In all, I believe that Grade 10 Day was extremely successful and the main ticket selling team and Dowar + Lincon really pulled this all together. It was a pleasure working on this event with everyone involved!

Actions Taken & Evidence:

  1. I understood that referencing current hot topics would boost interaction with the advertisement and took action on it in the 1st reel.
  • I understood that effective decision making in marketing would mean viewer retention and effective communication of product/service. From observing the Pinetree Instagram, I noticed that Mr. Lee uses ongoing trends online to convey information. I figured that matching ongoing trends would match Pinetree’s feed as well as boosting retention as it would reference a memorable topic. The reel also effectively communicated what will be there, where it is, and how to buy into it.

      2. To ensure I effectively used my time, I made the decision to take the initiative to move other’s belongings to a safer location.

  • As explained earlier, I didn’t want to idle around while others were hard at work. I wanted to create a positive impact towards the team effort, no matter how little it may be. I used my decision-making skills to move the bags- even if it wasn’t my duty to do so. As result, others joined in making the process quick and productivity slightly higher.

      3. I took over for Chami and his partner at the DJ station as I understood effective decision-making skills

  • As I was left with not much to do as roles solidified, I wanted to make effective decisions in my use of time. As I learned from managing Winter Formal, team members need breaks to boost productivity. I figured especially because Chami and his duo volunteered to help us after school, I wanted to proactively make sure they were able to take a break and some food.
