Spirit Assembly

Event Participation:

I was part of the hype crew for this spirit assembly. Before the assembly began, I helped set up chairs for the teachers, blew up balloons, and communicated updates from our point people, Baran and Heela, to the other hype crew members. At the start of the assembly, Hana, Heela, and I choreographed a dance to perform while students entered the gym. However, due to the chaos of organizing the Grade 11s and 12s, we couldn’t perform it. Instead, I assisted security by directing students to their designated seating areas, as many weren’t sure where to sit or were taking up too much space. I made sure to remind students to squeeze in tightly to make room for others.

Once the students were seated, the assembly officially began. During the events, I selected students wearing their team colors to participate in the tug-of-war and made sure to keep the energy high throughout the assembly. I hyped up the crowd during all events, including the lip-sync battle and tug-of-war, cheering for both sides and encouraging participation. I also handed out candy to students who were enthusiastic and showed team spirit by wearing their team colors. After the first half of the assembly, I helped guide students out through the exit doors and ensured they used the outside doors to leave. One challenge we faced during the first half was organizing the Grade 11s and 12s, as many were confused about where to sit.

For the second half, my team and I made a physical wall in the bleachers to separate the two grades, which worked much better and reduced confusion. I was also in charge of selecting participants for the tug-of-war again. As the second half of the assembly began, I noticed the Grade 9s and 10s seemed shy, so I made an extra effort to stand in front of their bleachers and cheer them on to boost their energy. I kept cheering throughout the events to engage the crowd and handed out candy to encourage them.

After the assembly ended, I helped pick up trash and helped Chami and Gudice with removing tape from the floor. Overall, I think the assembly went well, but one challenge I encountered as part of the hype crew was picking people to go up. It was difficult to approach students directly because the bleachers were packed, and many students were sitting on the floor in front, making it hard to move around. In addition, some people brought their friends with them, which took up additional time.

Circular competency:

Theme one: Principles and leadership of teamwork—Identity why it is important to be a team player

Actions/Evidence:

To work toward achieving the circular competency of teamwork, I focused on getting to know the other hype crew members so we could work together efficiently. I made it a priority to get to know each member by having conversations before the assembly. This helped create a positive and less awkward environment, as everyone felt comfortable sharing their ideas and suggestions. Collaboration and teamwork were very important when we planned our dance and other assembly activities. By brainstorming together, we were able to work together and include everyone’s ideas.

During the assembly, I actively communicated with my teammates to ensure we all knew what we were doing. For example, when we faced challenges with seating arrangements for the Grade 11s and 12s, I communicated important updates from our point people, Baran and Heela, to the other hype crew members. This kept everyone on the same page and allowed us to work as a team to fix the problem during the second half of the assembly by forming a physical barrier in the bleachers to separate the grades.

I also demonstrated teamwork and the importance of being a team player by stepping in whenever I saw a need, even if it wasn’t my assigned responsibility. For example, when some of the crew members struggled to select participants from the packed bleachers, I took the initiative to offer help by splitting the task. We decided that each of us would pick five participants, which allowed us to complete the task quicker and more efficiently.

In addition, I encouraged my teammates throughout the event, and we worked as a team to cheer on the 9s and 10s, as they didn’t have as much energy as the 11s and 12s. Overall, without everyone being a team player and working together the assembly wouldn’t have been able to run as smoothly as it did.
