October Event- Photo Booth B

Photo Booth B

 October 31st, 2024

Event Participation:

When I found out I would be part of the Photo Booth B event, I began researching theme ideas we could use to make it unique and engaging. During our first leadership meeting after school on Wednesday, we gathered to discuss roles and brainstorm initial ideas. I volunteered to handle cash and help with decorations, and together we finalized a “crime scene” theme for the booth. On Thursday, October 17th, we had our first lunch meeting, where we discussed specific decoration ideas and made a list of supplies we would need. I contributed suggestions for materials and designs, such as creating crime scene props that aligned with our theme.

In the following meeting on Monday, October 21st, I helped draw, colour, and cut out various decorations to add to the board, including items like knives, guns, handcuffs, and syringes. On Wednesday, October 23rd, we met after school to paint the backdrop. I contributed to the creation of “bloody” handprints and paint drips and suggested placements for blood splatters and the “Help Me” text. By Monday, October 28th, we added the final decorations, and I assisted with placement, spelling, and glueing/stapling everything onto the board. On Wednesday, October 30th, I helped wrap caution tape around the display and added finishing touches such as the “Missing Skelly” poster.

On the event day, Thursday, October 31st, I arrived 15 minutes early to help set up. My role was managing cash and tickets, and I collaborated with Viviana to decide our responsibilities so everything would run smoothly. I distributed candy and handed out tickets while Viviana handled cash collection. This worked quite efficiently; however, I noticed she was getting a bit overwhelmed due to the long line, so I offered to help with cash collection. In addition, to manage the crowd, I tried to organize customers into two groups: one line for ticket holders and another for those purchasing tickets. This kind of helped keep the line moving smoothly however, a lot of people weren’t listening as they were more concerned with getting their photos. Unfortunately, we had to end the event early due to a technical issue with the camera. I helped manage refunds and offered candy to those who looked disappointed.

After the event, I counted and sorted the money, then stayed to help with cleanup. I removed decorations, gathered extra supplies, and assisted with returning tables and wheeling the board back to the mezzanine. Overall, I believe the photo booth was a success. However, crowd management was challenging, particularly with getting people to form lines and move out of the area, especially those who had already taken their photos. In the future, having additional people for crowd control and setting up two clear lines, one for purchasing tickets and one for waiting, would help improve organization and efficiency.

Circular competency: Theme 5: Project planning: Work as an effective team member

Alignment with course goals:

• Collaboration Skills: One of my course goals is to improve my collaboration skills, especially valuing and acknowledging the ideas and perspectives of others. Effective teamwork requires being open to different ideas, and through this event, I was able to practice that by working with different members on tasks like planning, decorating, and setup.

• Leadership and Role Modeling: I want to take on more leadership roles and serve as a role model. Working as an effective team member in this project allowed me to lead by example. I took initiative in tasks, managed responsibilities, and ensured that everyone felt supported and offered help to anyone that needed it.

• Communication and Adaptability: Effective teamwork involves clear communication and adaptability skills, which are part of my course goals. Through tasks like cash handling, organizing the line, and directing students, I was able to practice these skills, and I had to communicate updates from our point person to my other team members as well as ticket sales to Justin, who was managing the photo taking. I also had to adapt quickly when the camera broke.

Encouraging Inclusivity and Participation: Another of my course goals is to create an environment where everyone feels heard and valued. Working as a team member during this event helped me contribute to a positive group atmosphere. I made sure everyone’s ideas and roles were respected and included.

Actions Taken:

Before the Event:

We worked collaboratively as a team to plan and execute the photo booth event. We started by defining roles and responsibilities, and I volunteered to handle cash and help with decorations. I actively contributed ideas, like adding a blood splatter effect using paint on the board. During brainstorming, I demonstrated teamwork by sharing ideas, supporting my teammates, and working alongside them to achieve our shared goal.

When we faced the issue of not having paintbrushes, I suggested, along with another team member, that we ask the art teacher to lend us some. This adaptability helped us stay on track, demonstrating my commitment to being an efficient team member. I also volunteered to use my hands to make the handprint decorations, as no one initially wanted to get paint on their hands; however, eventually Justin joined in to help. This willingness to step up showed that sometimes being an effective team member means stepping out of one’s comfort zone in order to support the overall success of the team.

In the days leading up to the event, I checked in with teammates and our point person to see if they needed any extra assistance. This included helping with decoration placement and discussing the best arrangement for the board. By staying engaged and offering extra support, I contributed to a positive team environment where everyone felt encouraged and motivated, allowing us to work efficiently together.

During the Event:

On the event day, I arrived 15 minutes early to assist with setup and ensure everything was ready. My primary role was handling cash and distributing tickets. By collaborating with Viviana, we divided tasks to keep everything moving smoothly. When things became busier, I noticed Viviana feeling overwhelmed, so I stepped in to help with cash collection, preventing the line from getting too long. This adaptability shows our teamwork, as we assisted each other to keep the event running efficiently.

I also saw that the line was getting disorganized, so I suggested creating two lines: one for people with tickets and one for those still purchasing. While managing the crowd was challenging due to its size, my efforts helped improve the flow. I also communicated ticket sales updates to Justin, who managed the photos, to keep everyone informed and ensure smooth coordination. This demonstrated effective teamwork, as clear communication is essential for a team to function efficiently.

After the Event:

\After the event, I continued to support the team by staying for cleanup. I helped take down decorations, pack supplies, and return tables to the mezzanine. I also assisted with counting and organizing the collected cash. By sharing cleanup responsibilities, I contributed to the event’s overall success and helped ensure that everyone’s workload was manageable, and one person was left with the responsibility of cleaning up the whole event, which is an important aspect of being part of a team.

Evidence:

Evidence 1: (Before the Event)

Specific Example: During our after-school meeting, we realized we didn’t have any paintbrushes for the decorations. I suggested that we ask the art teacher if we could borrow some and offered to go with another team member to get them.

• Explanation: This example highlights my commitment to being an efficient team member. By identifying a solution and volunteering to take action, I contributed to keeping our project on track. This demonstrates my ability to adapt and problem-solve, essential qualities in effective teamwork.

Evidence 2: (Before the Event)

• Specific Example: In the days before the event, I volunteered to colour, cut decorations, and set up our display board. I also painted handprints, stapled props to the board, and helped arrange the decorations. While I initially helped with drawing the decorations, I noticed that Viyana’s artistic skills were stronger, so I suggested she focus on drawing while I handled colouring and cutting to save time and contribute to the overall effectiveness.

• Explanation: This example demonstrates my competency in teamwork. By recognizing our strengths, I took the initiative to ensure tasks were distributed effectively. This decision allowed us to work more efficiently, as we each focused on tasks based on our skills, ultimately contributing to a smoother event preparation.

Evidence 3: (During the Event)

• Specific Example: On the event day, while managing the cash station, I noticed the line was becoming quite long and crowded. To help, I went through the line, directing those who had already purchased tickets to one side. This adjustment created more space for those still buying tickets, improving the flow, although it remained somewhat chaotic due to the crowd size and people not listening.

• Explanation: This example illustrates my ability to adapt and respond to challenges within a team environment. By taking the initiative to organize the line, I helped our team work more efficiently, demonstrating that effective teamwork requires setting up and supporting others as well as doing things that may be outside of your specific role or responsibility.

Evidence 4: (After the Event)

• Specific Example: After the event, I stayed to help with cleanup. I removed decorations, gathered extra supplies, and worked with my teammates to make sure everything was accounted for and put back in place.

Explanation: This example shows my dedication to supporting my team from start to finish. By helping with the cleanup, I demonstrated responsibility and teamwork, ensuring that we left the space in good condition. My willingness to stay until everything was done reflects my reliability and commitment, both important qualities in a team.
