Last quarter during science, my teacher introduced the periodic table project. My classmates and I had to choose any element on the periodic table and make an informative brochure about it. Since I was the second in line, I got to pick my element which was Oxygen. In our brochure we had to include a paragraph on its history, fun facts and a Bohr model for its ion. this was by far my favourite project for the entire school year.

The criteria for the project was simple and clear. The brochure had to be neatly coloured, original and needed to include all the information the instructions explained. My biggest challenges when working on this project was picking my element out of the 117 available, also formatting my paragraph and what information to put in. My space was limited and many scientists were important to the discovery of oxygen. I decided to go with the first person who discovered it and the chemist who found its important role in our respiratory system.

At first I was lost. I did not know how to put together a brochure, after doing my research, ideas started formulating in my head. I am proud of my design, it looked nice! My teacher displayed an example from the previous year, just to give us an idea of how much information to put in our brochures, which was very helpful. I already knew my brochure was going to be blue, it would fit in with my element.

After having a look at the examples in my class and on the internet, I did my rough draft. I liked the examples but they were not exactly what I was looking for, they were business brochures. The example in my class had three pages, the information was squished but the design was right. I made a long list of the things I liked and disliked about both of the examples. Then, I tried a process of elimination which left the things I wanted for my project.

The original project was made by hand, I coloured and wrote all the information in. But something did not feel right, I did not love it. I brought out my computer and started using PowerPoint. My final copy was a mix of the business brochures and the student’s. I changed my fonts and added a few details. I was extremely happy with the outcome of my new version, the old project was not satisfactory to me. I wanted to not only meet but exceed.

My last few steps were looking through my list of likes and dislikes to make sure I added everything in. I went through the criteria and looked at my project to see if it met expectations. After everything was in place, I printed my work and got 100%! I was happy I redid my project when I had doubts about it, even when it was 10pm. My project was used as an example for the class later on, and I was truly proud of myself and my work.
