My project is from 8th grade. We were doing Passion Projects in which we chose a topic to do an in-depth project on. I chose watercolor painting, because I had always wanted to learn how to use the medium properly.

Identify

I knew that to be successful, I would need to produce multiple paintings and show my progress over the year. I also knew that gathering the materials needed to paint and learning the techniques quickly would be a challenge, because watercolor is a complicated process.

Inspire

I remembered Passion Project presentations from previous years and thought specifically about how those with art-related Passion Projects tackled their projects. Most people made schedules and plans for when they would paint. This had worked well for them, as it gave them motivation and structure, so they were guaranteed to have enough paintings to show their progress over the year. For presenting, some had made slideshows while others had done mock-galleries or posters with pictures of their work.

Interpolate

I saw that many people that had made schedules had done well with the project, and it had kept them on track. I also noticed that the people that had done mock-galleries had retained more audience interest, as sitting through a slideshow of art wasn’t the most interesting. It was also hard for people to show improvement over time in a poster format, because they had to focus more on making everything fit.

Imagine

I decided that I was going to make a schedule of when I would paint and picked two days every month. For the presentation day, I would set up a mock-gallery at the side of a hall so that people could walk by and see my paintings. In my display I would put them in chronological order of when I painted them left-to-right, so it would be easy to see my progress.

Inspect

Over the year I had trouble keeping up with the due dates I had set for myself, but I still ended up with lots of paintings and overall, I greatly improved over the course of the year. If I had to do this project again, I would try even harder to stick with the schedule I made and do more research on techniques.
