Leadership has given me the opportunity to further develop skills I have been working on since kindergarten. From this, I have participated in events such as the international event, grade days, the talent show, Pinetree’s 25th anniversary, etc. In most of the events, my contributions included being a helper, but I would always make sure to take a bigger role to help out more. For instance, for the talent show role, I decided to take the challenging role of being a “handler”.
Based on the core competencies, the skills that I have developed further in this class include being able to collaboratively work with other students in order to achieve a common goal. This was most effectively shown in the international event I participated in. Even though I was not a point leader for this event, I felt that I contributed around the same amount of effort that a point leader would. This is because I was put in charge of organizing the Just Dance aspect which was one of the biggest activities. I was working collaboratively because I had to communicate with both the point leaders as well as the gym teachers to make sure everything was confirmed. As a result, I believe that my success was organizing this aspect of the international event. From organizing the Just Dance aspect, I was able to be dependable and organized in terms of creating a deadline to complete this task and creating additional meetings to organize the Just Dance. I have grown as a leader because I have been able to become more of a problem solver and use my critical thinking skills to come to a conclusion rather than having pointless questions. For example, during the grade 10 event, we were instructed to meet in the cafeteria. However, a group of us waited but no teacher arrived, I then decided to suggest we go check the library. I used my problem-thinking skills to participate in the event as I knew the event was being held in the library.
My personal strength throughout this term included being able to manage my time. This was most important when balancing my other classes with the leadership assignments and the meetings after school. If there was something that I needed to complete as an event task, I would make sure to get that done as soon as possible. I was also successful in setting and meeting realistic deadlines and goals, For example, I would plan what part of the leadership assignment to do each day in order to complete it by the deadline. This is because I value being on time and being dependable, so I make sure to reflect this on myself. In addition, this aligns with the leadership competency of being able to understand and abide by class/school expectations and norms. As we are in leadership, there is an expectation that things need to be completed on time and done to the best of our abilities. I try to achieve this expectation as much as I can. Though one of the leadership qualities that I found most challenging to achieve is being able to organize and run teams of people to accomplish a goal. To fix this, I hope to be a more prominent figure in leadership by becoming a point leader for an event. Overall, I felt that this term went well as I was satisfied with my level of participation and the marks I was receiving from the assignments. I also felt that I was an active member of leadership where my actions were meaningful.
