April Event- Grade 11 Day

>Wednesday, April 16th, 2025

For this months event, I was assigned to Grade 11 Day.  The team for grade 11 day were discussing a theme for this event during one of the Wednesday meetings. I suggested a ‘neon/glow in the dark’ or a Glow Jam party theme since it would be appealing to a lot of grade 11 students. I was glad that the team decided to go with my idea because last semester, I was in my math class and I had nothing to do and for some reason my teacher had past Pinetree yearbooks in one corner of her classroom so I decided to go through them just to pass some time. The 2000’s yearbook looked the most interesting and I saw  that year, Pinetree had a school dance for grade 11 students called “Glow Jam”. I took some inspiration and I thought it would be cool if we did something similar for one of the grade events for semester two. Besides that, I was assigned to marketing and I created two posters, I created one poster with one of the point people, Hana. We had a meeting during lunch one day before the actual event so I contributed in making some of the glow in the dark accessories and I helped some of my members with decorations such as drawing and cutting stars since some were thrown away accidently but the new decorations looked great. For the actual event, Epshie and I stepped up as MC’s and it was fun since I’m someone who is very comfortable with public speaking and it’s more enjoyable with a friend but I also made sure that everyone was having fun and no one was being left out at the party and I checked each station to see if everything was going smoothly or if anyone needed any help. After the event, I helped put things away and cleaned up. Overall, there are some things that need improvement, still, the process for this event and the event itself were a success!

>Curricular Competency, Theme 4, Public Relations and Forms of Communication: Creating diverse and interesting announcements, posters, and other media to get information to the student body or intended people.

  • Effective communication: Showing I can share ideas clearly and creatively with multiple people.
  • Active Listening: Listening to and valuing the contributions and ideas of others such as ideas for activities, food, supplies, etc. for this event.
  • Creating eye catching posters with key information for grade 11 students which worked effectively.

>Actions Taken:

Before the event, during a team meeting, I suggested the “Glow Jam” theme for Grade 11 Day. I explained my reasoning, drawing inspiration from a past Pinetree event. This theme was chosen because it was appealing to the grade 11 student body. During block 5 on April 16th, I helped set up for the event, taking the cafeteria tables away, I instructed those who didn’t know how to fold the cafeteria tables and helping to move them to the impulse room. Then I helped with the photobooth set up, putting up decorations on the board.

During the event, I was one of the MC’s along with Epshie. We worked together to engage the students, create an energetic atmosphere, communicating announcements, and ensuring everyone was having fun. We instructed what to do for the scavenger hunt, and food station. Even though one of the microphones were not working because the volume was decreased so we decided to switch microphones depending on who was going to speak. I was also assigned to help with the photobooth along with Rachel by taking pictures, making sure accessories were returned to the booth, and managing the line for the booth. I also walked around the cafeteria making sure everything was running smoothly in each station.

After the event, I participated in the clean up, helping to put away equipment and decorations, returning supplies back to certain people, picking up trash, and cleaning some of the surfaces of the cafeteria tables and tidying up the cafeteria overall. My communication skills are more stronger and improved because of this event.

>Evidence

  • Demonstrating effective communication through a pitch. Showcasing active listening by considering the needs of grade 11 students. I highlighted how the theme could be easily implemented using affordable glow in the dark accessories, making it a cost effective option.
  • As an MC, I made sure to highlight any upcoming activities, I also made sure to give shout outs to students, recognizing their participation and creating a sense of community.
  • When designing the posters, I focused on using bright, neon colours and bold, easy to read fonts to capture the attention of students. I worked with Hana, gathering her feedback on design and incorporating her suggestions. This highlights my collaboration and attention to detail in ensuring the posters were informative and engaging.
