Final Reflection

The past year of Leadership, especially the second semester, has been very fulfilling. Looking back at my midterm reflection, I realized that my leadership skills have grown a great deal throughout the course.

Compared to the first semester, I have participated in a wider variety of roles in events. For Love of Books, I was responsible for promotions and created a poster, along with supervising on the event day. In Easter Fluffle, I was involved with both preparation and promotions. What stands out to me about this event was how I took action when I noticed a problem. While setting up for the event, I realized that the paper eggs we were using could have been confusing to the students. At that time, the promotional posters an Instagram post was the extent of the instructions for the event. The eggs themselves were made from paper and did not indicate their purpose clearly. I realized that most students might ignore the eggs, thinking that they were Easter decorations. With another event member, I wrote an announcement and ran it by Ms. Turpin. On Monday, the morning of the event, we recorded the message in the office so it could be played at lunchtime. Looking back, I am proud that I was able to take the initiative and solve a problem when I encountered one.

Lastly, in the Spring Fling event, I demonstrated all the skills I’ve learned throughout the year. During the planning stage, I was active on Teams and contributed ideas – for example, I suggested we make balloons decorated like bees. Later, during the lunchtime decoration-making sessions, I helped the other event members with making the bumblebee balloons. One thing I’m proud of is my attendance during this time – I consistently attended every meeting, which was one of my goals during the midterm. Finally, on the day of the event, I helped set up these decorations after school. I encountered a few small problems, like not having enough balloons or flower decorations to cover the whole area, so I improvised and adjusted how many of each decoration I used in one area.

Altogether, my interpersonal and planning skills have improved, and this course has changed my view on my own leadership abilities. Last year, I would not have believed that I could thrive in a highly teamwork-oriented environment. However, my experience in Leadership has shown me otherwise.
