Fishbowl activity #1

I agreed with a point that was said about how the older generation might be scared or less open about having social justice taught in schools. As they are still stuck with teachings that happened many years ago, and not caught up. They don’t understand that new generations are more inclined to learning new things about their surroundings and communities.

I think it’s hard to say if social justice should be taught everywhere, not everyone is as privileged as us to express their opinions on certain issues in a classroom setting. As many states and other parts of the world would not be open to hearing another side’s opinion on controversial topics. An example being politics which could result in arguments or many people getting offended.

I enjoyed how during this activity everyone got to express their opinions without anyone getting shunned out. It was nice to listen to what everyone had to say. Even if I agreed with them or not.

One part about this activity I think could change is maybe we should be forced to dive into each question deeper. We as a class should go deeper into answering each question. Not just answering each question surface level. Like understanding other world views as to why something is a certain way.

My takeaway from this activity was that we are very lucky to be able to learn about social justice in our school. As some international students said that this subject isn’t taught back where they live. This could be for certain safety reasons, we need to acknowledge that here in Canada we are privileged enough to be able to speak our opinions in class.
