Course Goals

1. Learning Objectives: What specific skills or knowledge do you hope to acquire by the end of this course? Explain why these are important to you.

By the end of this course, I would like to improve my communication, conflict resolution, adaptability, motivation, and many other skills. These skills are all important to me, and although I am already working on them, I hope to push myself further. Communication is a fundamental aspect required to convey ideas thoroughly and to build connections with my peers. Conflict resolution is crucial for handling disagreements/misunderstandings constructively, and validating everyone’s opinions and feelings. For adaptability and motivation, this is a goal of mine as it is special for me to get out of my comfort zone more, and adapt to new environments/people, and believe that this course will provide many new views for me. These skills and ideas are all essential to me, as they will support me in growing as a student and mould me into a student that people feel at ease to work with.

2. Application of Knowledge: How do you plan to apply what you learn in this course to real-world situations or future academic/career pursuits? Provide examples.

I plan to apply the experience of teamwork and communication to my pursuits. Carrying a strong sense of communication will provide easier steps in the future. This aspect will support me to excel and exceed in group projects or workforces, where coordinating with peers/colleagues is crucial to success. With teamwork, a lot of aspects follow and learning empathetic skills in this course will prepare to be understanding and equipped to mediate misunderstandings, whether in academic environments or personal relations. In my future career, particularly in social sciences/criminal psychology, leadership will be essential in managing teams, being time efficient and initiative with my team, or making decisions under pressure. These general skills will foster and grow a stable path for me to follow in the near and far future.

3. Personal Growth: In what ways do you expect this course to contribute to your personal development? Consider aspects such as critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.

I expect this course to heavily contribute to my personal growth, particularly in risk-taking, comfort zones, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Being in leadership will push me to understand my personal requirements and comfort zones, which I eventually want to grow out of, with more time. All these skills will sharpen my ability and knowledge to think critically and assess situations from diverse perspectives, which will benefit my future out of high school. I want to challenge myself to grow in ways I have found uncomfortable before; such as confrontation, quick problem-solving, etc. I am confident these skills will positively carry into my personal development, eventually translating into various factors in life.

4. Challenges and Strategies: Identify potential challenges you might face in achieving your goals for this course. What strategies will you employ to overcome these challenges?

A challenge that I may face in achieving my goals for this course is balancing and juggling all of my life events at once. Being in grade 12 now, I have many things to focus on such as University applications, or general grades. To overcome this, I will focus on allotting certain times or days toward my goals and assignments for this course while valuing my other activities. Another challenge I could face is stepping out of my comfort zone of getting to know others or being more versatile in different groups. Knowing this, I have been reflecting on where I am in terms of my comfort zone, but plan to take small steps out of it, rather than pushing myself too far. Overall, to combat these potential challenges, I want to seek feedback from teachers and peers to have a continuous incline of improvement. Consistent personal check-ins and reflection will increase my progress and plan to adjust my strategies when needed.

Spirit Assembly (09/18/2024)

This year, I was honoured to be the MC for the September 2024 Spirit Assembly. In my role, I worked closely with Jerome and all of the point people to effectively get the assembly running.

Before and throughout the assembly, there were road bumps and learning curves before and throughout the assembly, but overall, I believe it was a fun and engaging event. A theme in the curricular competencies I found myself using the most was teamwork and principles of leadership. There was a lot of back and forth, with people pointing out what we should do to improve or run things smoothly, using a lot of communication throughout the whole assembly.

All crews had a pretty intense time crunch, but with communication and awareness, we were able to manage a lot more. Jerome and I communicated a lot with gestures or talking to adjust to either grade group as our audience was much different and had to improvise in some areas where we needed work. I was able to recognize why it was so important to be a team player and be understanding and empathetic of my peers or audience’s contribution during this whole event.

Within this event, I learnt the significance of thorough communication and learnt how to deal with unexpected situations as a team, instead of working on issues alone. Overall, I would call this event a success and I am proud of the work that Leadership put out for the school to be a part of!
