What is my assignment?

In history class, we did a project called “Trial of Richard moneybags”. It is suppose to be like a trial in court with defenders, witnesses and many more

Identify

  • So we had 2 groups/team, defendant and crown. They both had Lawyers and witnesses. The crown people had to prove that Richard Moneybags is guilty, while the defendant had to prove that Richard Moneybags is innocent to the judge. The story is, Richard Moneybags was a factory owner, and it has been said that he has been abusing his own workers and forcing child labour. I was on the defendant team’s lawyer. If the Defendant side wins, Richard Moneybags is released, but if the crown side wins, the judge will have to choose the sentence (it can be low as a fine, or high as sentenced to death)
  • The tricky part about this project/assignment is gathering information and evidence that Richard Moneybags is innocent. We had to do bunch of research about Richard Moneybag’s workers, had to make up questions, and find objections, if we know that one of the crown witnesses are lying, and let me tell you, it was not fun.

Inspire

  • So, I couldn’t find any information about trial projects online, however I did get in touch with my teacher and friends. The trial could’ve been better if we had more classmate to participate and wear fancy clothes, just to get into the mood. To get things more exciting, I felt like the trial could’ve added a bit more realistic acting, when we did the trial, it felt like everyone in the court sounded like they just woken from a 20 hour nap. What I mean by acting, I mean, witnesses being really angry, the defendant being more serious, and R.MB (Richard moneybags) being a bit more worried, scared and nervous, or add a jury, because we didn’t have one

Interlope

  • First, I would make a separate desk with the people who has the jury role, and they have to make sure they listen carefully and take notes, whether if the person is guilty or not. If many of us wears like tuxedos, or black/gray jackets and pants, and the judge would actually have a mallet, it would really be in the moment.

Imagine

  • Well at first when you walk in the classroom, the room has flags, former prime ministers of Canada and famous important people of Canada long time ago. You would see the big desk at front, which is the judge, and 2 small desk on both sides, which is where the crown and defence witnesses sits. In the corner of the classroom is where the jury people would sit and take notes if the person is guilty or not. The left side of the classroom is the defendant team, and at front of them, is the lawyer and right beside is either the witnesses or Richard Moneybags, same thing with the other side, but without Richard Moneybags

Inspect

  • The only difference from the trial in my image and the trial that we did, is the clothing, has a jury, and everyone wears fancy clothes. Other than that, everything else is the same, but instead of the judge deciding if Richard Moneybags is guilty or not, it is the jury’s job to decide, and the judge is just there to decide the sentence if Richard Moneybags is guilty.

Bonus: During the trial when we were doing it, Richard Moneybags was found not guilty and the defendant side won! Yay
