My Cuneiform Sentence

Original Sentence: My ideal meal to eat is Dolma with a side of plain Balkan yogurt.

Questions for after:

  • How do you think using this form of writing (a language) affected how people communicated with each other, in person and writing?

I think that languages, or alphabets, or mere forms of communication from an older date are seemingly complex to us, but upon observing the cuneiform language I can infer its impact on people was large due to the fact that this was what they would write for and too each other. Now I would assume since a lot of the parts of the alphabet is similarly shaped but differently organized that they would need to write about things more informational and less additional then we do now. A lot of what we write is texting or things for work and both of these mediums wouldn’t be necessary for them because they would express their feelings and ideas more verbally I would guess ad through actual actions rather than constantly writing for them I believe writing was a tool to keep people informed of their economy. Due to the similarity I mentioned before I think, like I mentioned, the language in writing was used for very specific and general intents.

  • Do you think this version of “text” would have affected people’s lives? How would this be the case?

Yes it would. When I was completing just a simple sentence it took me a very long time, and I had to look through to find things I had already looked at because my eyes were just stuck since they all looked very alike to each other. And the alphabet is so opposite from ours, it is conjoined with two letter, like the alphabet is sounds rather than singular letters as opposed to ours. This is also a connection to another difference, that being that there are some vital letters like f and y and others, including some sounds like ch, that it doesn’t include. Something we have to also take into consideration is that there is not a likelihood of anyone being able to write like this at the quantity that’s demanded in todays society, this type of writing made sense to peoples who primarily expressed their writing on clay tablets, something that doesn’t happen anymore and wouldn’t be able to contain its longevity. It is not an ideal text for people today use, almost being impossible.

  • What form of text do you use in your life that affects people’s lives?

Of the top of my head I can think of digital examples like texting using slang and emails using abbreviations, social media posts using hyperlinks and emojis. Understandable by only my generation and confusing to all else.
