INS 17, I Do Not Understand

Independent Novel Study Assignment #17

Something I do not understand from ‘The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon’…

Stephen King, the author of this novel, creates a very straight-forward plot of a 9-year-old girl losing herself within a vast forest. Much of the story seemed like filler but often had meaningful words. What made me feel uncomfortable several times throughout the story was the weirdly detailed descriptions of the young Trisha needing to use the bathroom. I do not understand the intent behind this, possibly purposefully creating Trisha into an eating-breathing-excreting human being. Though to me I feel as if the detailed descriptions made me feel more irked by the author than interested. I wonder why the author chose to explain so far into detail about these moments Trisha would have kept private, instead of finding other interesting moments (such as her physical state after 9 days without civilization).
