1 page reflection on hieroglyphics and emojis

Throughout the history of Ancient Egypt and modern society, symbols dominated speech and writing. When communication was possible through technology, people began to shorten and efficiently spread their message through the usage of emojis. Throughout time, these emojis circumnavigated into various sites and various trends which problematically changed what the emojis meant. Usually, many emojis stayed the same however a few changed due to social trends. A babble news article showed and wrote how “although emojis lack the specific meaning to be logographic, they are much more sophisticated than mere pictograms.” Emojis are essentially a complex version of hieroglyphics . The meanings of emojis can change under the circumstances they are used in, for example the eggplant is either perceived as a vegetable or a phallic object. These mixed definitions would often cause confusion and sometimes incorrect meanings causes problems with the context, especially in court cases. Even with evolutionary changes to the definitions of emojis, they are still a common way to communicate and express one’s opinion.

Emojis are what hieroglyphics were supposed to be. However, many view emojis as just a pictogram that serves as a side dish to a sentence. Emojis can be used as an efficient way to replace sentences but because of high amounts of variety in definitions it would cause some confusion while translating. Unlike emojis, hieroglyphics are emojis that have a direct and solid meaning. They have one central word to represent each pictogram. Hieroglyphics also contain alphabets which is something modern emojis don’t have.
