What’s in my bag?

For this assignment I am using my school bag that I take with me everywhere I go, everyday. In this bag, I carry my laptop, headphones, air pods, laptop charger, book, wallet, gum, lock, pencil case, and cologne.

What is the daily need for the items in your bag? Why do you carry it in your bag all days or most days?

I need my laptop for many things including school work and for my job. I work as a soccer referee and a dishwasher which means my laptop is a necessity in communicating with my boss and co-workers and figuring out and planning my schedule. In school, I use it to organize and complete my work making it easier not only for me, but also my teachers. For this reason, I also need my laptop charger, in case my laptop dies.

I carry both headphones and air pods in my bag because of my schedule. While at school I will use air pods because they are smaller and more convenient to use compared to headphones, which are bulkier and soundproof making it inconvenient to use them in school. While using air pods, I am still able to hear teachers, classmates while still listening to music which makes them good to use in school. But because my headphones are soundproof, I use them at the gym, while playing soccer, and on the bus.

The book I am currently reading is called Think and Grow Rich By: Napoleon Hill. This book is about the dynamic of the world, and how you can use strategies to help further yourself and your career. I read this book whenever I have free time like when I finish work early in classes or when I am on the bus.

I keep my wallet in my bag because it holds all of my id’s, my license, credit card and any money I have. This is always in my bag because I never know when I will need my id’s or credit card, and I take this bag everywhere so I will always have it on me.

I also always keep Excel Winter Fresh Gum in my bag because throughout the day, I am often chewing gum. I get distracted easily, and I have found that chewing gum helps me focus and stay on track.

I carry my school lock with me because I use it everyday for fitness and conditioning at school and when I go to the gym.

My pencil case holds all the supplies I need for school including pencils, pens, sharpie, whiteout, highlighter and a calculator. These are all tools I need for school and use daily.

What do the items in your bag say about the literacies you have? What do the items tell us about how you communicate and interact with your society, culture, school, etc?

My headphones, lock, and gum show my literacy in working out and going to the gym. I use these 3 items every time I go to the gym, and it tells us that I go quite often. Another literacy that is shown through items in my bag is my laptop and book which shows my literacy around school and how I am able to use things like Microsoft Teams and Word to both communicate with my teachers and classmates and complete work online. My book shows my literacy in the world of business and how I am still learning from this book, which also shows my drive and willingness to learn. My wallet shows the literacy of how I interact with society and businesses around me; and how am I often buying things like food or clothes. My headphones and air pods display my knowledge of music, because of how often I listen to it. This shows the literacy of how music is a huge part of my day and how I can almost functional better while listening to it.

How might these items (artifacts) be considered “texts” and what do they say about you, the places you inhabit, the cultures with which you engage, and/or the activities you take up?

The items in my bag like the lock, shows how I am have a good memory, and can work well with numbers. Another item that could be considered text is my book. This shows my interest and knowledge in business and the literacy of how I am currently taking business courses in school.Another item that could be considered text is the gum. I only carry Excel Winter Fresh Gum with me because it is my favourite flavour. I have tried many other flavours, yet this is the only one that I enjoy.

What would this same bag have looked like, say, 5 or 10 years ago?

10 years ago, I was a grade 1 student at Hampton Park Elementary. My bag would have looked completely different, as I would not have had any technology including my laptop, phone, head phones or air pods. Although I would still have a pencil case, it would be filled with other things like crayons, markers and scissors instead of pens and sharpies. I would still have a book in my bag, as I have was an avid reader when I was young. Because I was in elementary school, I would have not needed items like the lock, gum or cologne.
