What is one thing you heard that you agree with?

One thing I heard that I agree with that my peers brought up is the age at which social justice should be taught. Many classmates stated that social justice should be taught from elementary school onwards. I agree with this because Social Justice education can help students understand and appreciate diversity, and promote equality by challenging discriminatory attitudes and behaviours. It can also help students develop empathy and respect for people from different cultures, religions, and backgrounds and prepare students for the future. In an increasingly diverse world, students need to have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to navigate complex social issues and work toward creating a more just and equitable society.

What is one thing you heard that you disagree with?

One thing I disagree with is Social justice will get in the way of education. I believe Social Justice encourages an environment where students are encouraged to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and think creatively about solutions to problems. This helps students develop essential skills such as communication, collaboration, and problem-solving which are essential for success in life outside the classroom.

Write one takeaway you appreciated about this activity.

One takeaway I appreciated about this activity was engaging with my peers and hearing their opinions on the topic. This activity allowed me to hear a variety of perspectives and gain a deeper understanding of the different questions that were added in as the activity continued. The fishbowl activity also encouraged me to think critically about the potential benefits and drawbacks of incorporating social justice into schools, and to consider how it could impact students and their education.

What is one part of this activity that could use improvement?

One part of this activity that could use improvement is ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute and share their perspectives. I think one way to achieve this could be by limiting the number of times each person can speak and ensuring that everyone gets a chance to talk before anyone speaks again. For example, setting a limit of five speaking turns for each person could help ensure that the discussion is more inclusive and that everyone has an opportunity to share their thoughts. This approach could help prevent dominant voices from taking over the conversation and create a more collaborative discussion.

Write one takeaway about what one of your peers said that had an impact on you.

One takeaway about what one of my peers said that impacted me was that social justice should be a huge part of the curriculum. This point made me reflect on the current curriculum and how it can often overlook or neglect critical issues related to social justice. It highlighted the importance of educating students about these issues and preparing them to become active and engaged in promoting positive change in their communities.
