In this post I will demonstrate my use of creative fluency in my Scratch project. This was a project for my IT9 class where we made either 1 complicated program, or 2 simple programs. A program was considered complicated if it was interactive, where the viewer would control what happened. A simple program would be something like a video, or animation where the viewer just sits back and watches.

(this is the project I made)

Identify: As I mentioned before, I had a choice of 1 complicated program, or 2 simple programs. I chose to do 1 complicated program and met the criteria of making it interactive because that was all that was needed to be successful, as it was just a way for us to get used to Scratch. Some of the challenges with this was the moving blocks, timing for the character to jump and how to keep score and make it stop when the game ended.

Inspire: I took inspiration mainly from Mario because he was the first thing I thought of when I had the idea to make a side scrolling game. I used the sprite design for Mario because it would be very difficult to make one. I also took some inspiration from Geometry dash’s background and overall gameplay.

Interpolate: Mario and Geometry dash are both side scrolling games where you dodge obstacles. This is why I decided to use them as examples for my game. A difference between them is that Geometry dash uses music and the timing of the jumps are supposed to match the beat, which would be extremely difficult to program. Mario also has monsters that can kill you if u touch them which also would be hard to program as they would have to appear randomly and try to kill you. These two games are addicting because it is so simple that you think you can win, when in reality they can be very difficult, which is why games like these succeed.

Imagine: I decided to have the background and obstacles look similar to the ones in Geometry dash because they look simple and clean. I chose the iconic Mario to be the protagonist of my game because he has a nice colourful design. I didn’t want this game to be too complicated and time consuming because this was just a test project. This is why I chose the most important parts of each game and combined them.

Inspect: After I finished the coding process the game was finished. There were many problems during the coding and I had to retry the game many times to test if it worked. After I finished I submitted the assignment because the only criteria that was given to us was to make it interactive, which it was.
